Abstract

Introduction

Mental health disorders are increasingly prevalent worldwide, particularly among younger populations. Stress, anxiety, and disturbed sleep are major contributors to declining psychological well-being. Ayurveda highlights Shiroabhyanga (head massage with medicated oils) as a preventive and promotive measure for mental health. Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn.), described as a Medhya Rasayana, has documented neuroprotective, adaptogenic, and anxiolytic properties.

Methods

A single-arm, open-label clinical trial was conducted at Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune, on 32 individuals presenting with mental stress. Participants were instructed to perform daily self-administered Shiroabhyanga using Yashtimadhu Siddha Taila for 30 consecutive days.
Assessments were carried out at baseline, day 14, day 21, and day 30 using standardized tools:

  • International Stress Management Association (ISMA) questionnaire
  • Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)
  • Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)

Results

Marked improvement was observed across all parameters. ISMA scores reduced by 40.59%, PSS by 38.7%, and PSQI by 40.59% after 30 days. Participants reported significant enhancement in sleep quality and a consistent reduction in perceived stress. No adverse effects were noted during the intervention.

Discussion

The findings indicate that Yashtimadhu Siddha Taila Shiroabhyanga is effective in reducing mild to moderate stress and improving sleep quality. These outcomes validate the classical Ayurvedic concept of Shiroabhyanga as a measure for psychosomatic well-being and highlight the role of Yashtimadhu as a Medhya Rasayana in modern integrative mental healthcare.
The absence of adverse events further supports the safety and tolerability of this intervention. However, the study was limited by its single-arm, open-label design and small sample size. Larger, randomized controlled trials are recommended to confirm these results and establish broader clinical applicability.
